BH Cosmetics: Royal Affair Eyeshadow Palette Review and Swatches!

Hi Friends!

Today we are talking about the BH Cosmetics Royal Affair eyeshadow palette! I haven’t talked much about BH Cosmetics on my blog because I don’t really own a lot from the brand. I think I have a few other palettes that my sister gave me of their single eyeshadows but this is the first eyeshadow palette that I have really used. I LOVE BH Cosmetic’s brushes though so I figured I would give this palette a shot.

This palette was released only a few months ago and retails for $18. I bought it on sale at Ulta but it looks like it is only available on the BH Cosmetics website now. (But luckily, it is 40% off right now as well!). The palette comes with 20 eyeshadows and a mirror! Out of the 20 eyeshadows, 7 are shimmery and 13 are matte.

The Packaging

The packaging is… not that attractive to me. The front of the palette is a muted gem stone vibe. I understand the concept because gems are very luxurious but I don’t think the packaging was executed very well. It is just boring for how pretty gems should be.

The inside of the palette around the mirror is a dark burgundy red. Towards the tops of the mirrors are little cut outs of gem stones. I really don’t think this is very classy on packaging. Around the shadow, the gemstone “background” is very distracting from the shadow colors.

Overall, the packaging isn’t that great. But I also recognize that BH Cosmetics isn’t a huge brand like Too Faced. And they are way more affordable so that packaging isn’t always going to blow you away.

The Shades and Swatches

In the first row, you have:

Reign – This is the normal matte cream shadow that comes in post palettes. I use this to set my eyeshadow primer.

Majasty – This is a milk chocolate matte shade.

Lord – This is a dark taupe / grey brown shimmer shade.

Lady – This is a bubble gum pink matte shade.

Regal – This is a dark cherry red matte shade.

In the second row, you have:

Crown – This is one of the more unique shades in the palette. It is a shimmery green apple shadow.

Duchess – This is a dark chocolate matte shade. It is the darkest brown in the palette so I like using it to deepen up the crease.

Imperial – This is a light golden shimmer shade.

Monarch – This is a matte dark forest green shade.

Enchanted – This is matte black shade. I am pretty impressed with this shadow even though I don’t really wear black eyeshadow.

In the third row, you have:

Throne – This is a light sky blue shimmer shade. In the pan it appears blue but it is hard to build it up to that blue color on the eyes. It appears more as an icy white.

Palace – This is a cool toned grey brown matte shade.

High Tea – This is a silver shimmer shade. It is not as opaque as I would like but still pretty.

Empress – This is a cool toned milky brown shade.

Aristocrat – This is a shimmery gold brown shade.

In the fourth row, you have:

Primrose – This is a peachy matte shade.

Prince – This shade is burnt orange rusty matte shadow.

Honor – This is a pretty copper shimmery shade. It is one of my favorite lid shades in the palette.

Emperor – This is a coffee tan / brown matte shade.

Princess – This is a cranberry plum shimmer shade. It is also a really pretty shade and one of the more unique ones in the palette.

My Review

I am pleasantly surprised by this palette. I think the quality is amazing – seriously when I swatched all of these shadows, I was blown away! They are really soft and easy to blend. There are a couple of shades that are not as pigmented as I would like (i.e Throne) but most of them showed up really well. I think this palette is really easy to work with.

My biggest complaint is the shade selection. Although, I feel like I can get a variety of looks and this is definitely an easy go to palette because of all the neutral shades – I just feel uninspired. This palette doesn’t excite me. I feel like they could have added some pops of colors for the gem stone and they did a little bit with Crown and Princess but most of this a mid-tone neutral type shades. I just am not excited by it at all.

But again, I think the quality is really good! I also really like that this palette is vegan, cruelty free, and gluten free. I think that makes BH Cosmetics a step above others. I definitely appreciate this palette for what it is.

Let me know what you thought of this palette! Do you like other BH Cosmetic palettes? Let me know if I should try something else!

  1. Those are beautiful swatches! I get what you mean though…looking at it as a whole, I feel kind of bored with it. I have their Take Me Back to Brazil… The quality is good but it’s not something I just use by itself or even very often 🀷
